Shay Doron in a great game led Maryland to an 89-65 win over Harvard in the first round of the NCAA tournament. It was harder than the score indicates, but the Terps got it together in the 2nd half. Ole Miss awaits in the 2nd round (1:00am Weds - Live on ESPN Israel).
Maryland 89 – Harvard 65
"Oh gosh, am I going to miss her" said Brenda Frese about her senior who led the way for Maryland tonight after the game. Doron got off to a great start while her teammates seemed hesitant, played smart with a lot of experience and just did it all on the floor. She finished with 21 points (6/11 2pt, 3/3 3pt) and 7 boards in one of her best games of the season, she was hitting from everywhere and knew when to take control and when to get her teammates involved, and as usual provided a lot of energy, determination and strong defense.
The Terps started with Sa'de Wiley-Gatewood in place of Kristi Toliver for the first time this season, in an attempt to take some pressure off of the young point guard. They tried to push the ball inside but ended up with some turnovers, Doron from 3 put Maryland on the scoreboard. Harvard answered on the other end and led 7-3, before Laura Harper and Doron on the break tied it. Toliver entered after four minutes, Doron gave Maryland their first lead and first points from Toliver and Crystal Langhorne pushed it to 14-9. The Terps kept attacking and held Harvard scoreless for five minutes, Marisa Coleman with six points helped increase the led to 28-14. Harvard scored 7 in a row to cut it to 21-28 but Maryland led 38-25 at the half.
The Terps stepped up their aggressiveness in the 2nd half, Doron with defensive pressure and a steal marked the momentum change. Maryland was sharing the ball and getting out on the break, where they play their best. Doron with six points from outside, inside and midrange completed a 13-0 run that made it 51-27. Soon after that she hit another 3 which gave Maryland its biggest lead, 54-30. Toliver with her first 3 points of the half (after going 1 for 5 from downtown in the first half) and Jade Perry with 4 made it 65-44 with 8 minutes to go. Harvard tired to hang in tough and keep it respectable, but Doron with another 3 made it 79-54 in a very impressive showing from her. She added another deuce as the Terps went on to win 89-65.
"I'm happy about our unselfish play tonight, when we play like that we're pretty unstoppable" said Frese at the end. "Shay was our energy spark plug tonight, our biggest leader, she leads by example."
Maryland will face a very tough Ole Miss team in the 2nd round, 7th seed who recorded an impressive 88-74 win over #10 TCU earlier tonight.
