Sky bound

The WNBA will have a new team next summer – the Chicago Sky. The expansion draft was held today. Three players that are currently playing in Israel were chosen and will be headed for the windy city in the summer.

Chelsea Newton of Raanana Hertzeliya, Stacey Lovelace Tolbert of Ashdod and DeTrina White of Bnei Yehuda are now members of the Chicago Sky. In the expansion draft, each WNBA team could protect six players.

The protected lists were not published, but in Sacramento’s case it isn’t hard to guess. The reigning champs definitely protected All Stars Yolanda Griffith, DeMya Walker & Ticha Penicheiro. Nicole Powell and Rebekkah were certainly not left unprotected, and the sixth player apparently was Kara Lawson. The Sky picked up Newton, a member of the league’s All Rookie team, who started all season long for the Monarchs including the playoffs, where she averaged 5.8 points in 22.8 minutes per game.

The Minnesota Lynx will have to do without the services of Stacey Lovelace Tolbert next season. She is coming off the best season of her career with an average of 6.1 points in 17.5 minutes per game for the Lynx in 2005.

The New York Liberty definitely could have protected DeTrina White had they wanted to, since the team has so many free agents that Chicago wouldn’t pick anyway. White played in only 13 games last season, averaging just 6.9 minutes per game. The move to Chicago is probably good news for her.
