New faces on Israeli women's NT

Eli Rabi, the new head coach of the Israeli women's national team, announced the roster for the "last chance" tournament next month. As usual there are no posts, no shortage of point guards and the new faces belong to the U-21 NT.

Israel will play in a 10-team "last chance" tournament next month, while the team that finishes 1st qualifies for the European Championships.

The final roster is as followed: Tamar Maoz, Ornit Shwartz, Sarit Arbel, Shiri Sharon, Sharon Zeevi, Liron Cohen, Merav Dori, Chen Nusel, Shiran Tzeiri, Michal Epstain, Shimrit Gigi, Rivi Grinboym and Tal Salz. Tzeiri and Nusel will make their debut with the senior NT, after they went undefeated and won the U21 class B European Championship along with Merav Dori.

Rabi's first move in order to stop the NT's losing streak was refreshing the roster. Michal Epstain, Shiran Tzeiri, Chen Nusel, Rivi Grinboym and Tal Salz all did not take part in the NT's miserable campaign last year.

The players who did play last season and will not play this time include Rinat Zalts-Levin, Taly Noy, Katia Abramzon who will be busy with the U18 team and Laine Selwyn who's recovering from an injury.

Other than Selwyn, players who could have been impact players on the NT but won't play are of course Shay Doron (prior commitments to Maryland), and the injured post players Katia Levitzky and Inbar Orion.

The NT will take part in a preparation tournament on July 31st in Italy against the Italian and Brazilian national teams. Brazil won the bronze medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics but will of course be without Janeth Arcain and Iziane Castro-Marques who are currently playing in the WNBA.

Israel will play its first game of the last chance tournament in Croatia, August 7. The first home game is on August 10, vs. Ukraine.
