Bess Greenberg signs with Ramat Hasharon

Anda Ramat Hasharon has begun preparing for the 05/06 season as they signed Jewish American Bess Greenberg (26, 1.73), a combo guard who played in Denmark in the last four years. Greenberg's & Ostfeld's comments inside.

Greenberg graduated from Binghamton University in New York. In her junior and senior year Binghamton became a provisional DI school. In four years at Binghamton, Greenberg was named to the All-American twice and to the Academic All-American team three times. She led the school to two NCAA tournament appearances and two ECAC championships. She won the NCAA woman of the year honor as a senior in 2001, for excelling in sports, academics and community work. “Greenberg is a combo guard, she is a scoring PG. She can score off penetrations or dish it out, and can run through screens very well” said Scott Granowitz, Safsal's American correspondant.

Over the last month Greenberg contacted agent Roni Lupo, about wanting to make an “aliya” and play in the Israeli league. I met Greenberg at the annual Streetball happening at Herzeliya, she said she has been in Israel for about a week. “I’m very excited to be here, I’ve heard a lot about Ramat Hasharon and I know it’s a big club in Israel and in Europe,” said Greenberg. “The fact Ramat Hasharon plays in Europe was a major reason for me wanting to join them, that has been a goal of mine” she added, who was the Danish league MVP last year but according to her the level of play isn’t very high. “In Denmark, basketball is like the 5th most popular sport, after soccer and handball and some other sports. The Israeli league’s level is definitely higher.”

Over the last few weeks we’ve heard a lot about the status of the Israeli player, and so the first question that came to mind about Ramat Hasharon’s new point guard is what does this move mean for Shiri Sharon. “We like what we see from Greenberg but still she is not a superstar,” said coach Orna Ostfeld. “We need three point guards on the team, that is the most important position on the court. The team plays both in Israel and in Europe and we can’t relay on just two point guards cause in case on of them gets injured we’re left with one. We’re going to upgrade the team this season. Last year Shiri was hurt for a month and a half and it was a miracle that we survived with Laine being the only player who could play the 1. You have to have more that 2 point guards otherwise and injury could cost you the season.”

Sharon & Greenberg are about the same age. Sharon finished her career at Duquesne as the all time assist leader, Greenberg finished her career at Binghamton as the all time leading scorer. “I spoke to Shiri and I know what she’s thinking and feeling” said Ostfeld. “Obviously she wants to be a starter but on a team like ours, with so much pressure and with us wanting to go all the way in Israel and Europe, I think there is room for 3 point guards and a nine player rotation. Last year Shiri & Laine played together sometimes too.” In response to the question about how Ramat Hasharon would react should Sharon, who is under contract with the team, ask to go play to a elsewhere said Ostfeld : “We have no reason to dispute, if Shiri asks to leave we will let her go”.
