Ramat Hasharon’s amazing week continues. Laine Selwyn, point guard for the Israeli National Team and Anda Ramat Hasharon, has signed a contract with the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks. Selwyn will attend the Sparks’ pre season training camp in late April, and compete for a spot on the roster. LA is one of the strongest teams in the WNBA, and has won the Championship in 2001 and 2002.
Selwyn to 'Safsal': "I'm excited but it's not definite yet, I'll have to work hard and make the team".
Selwyn is keeping cool despite the big news. “I got invited to go to training camp, it’s not a sure thing yet but I signed the contract for the camp which is about 3 weeks. The Sparks fed-exed it to me on Sunday. I’m excited but like I said it’s not a definite thing yet, I have to work hard and make the team, I can get cut at any time, like any other player”.
Selwyn, one of the greatest players in the history of Pittsburgh University, wasn’t drafted after graduating in 2003. Last summer, following a terrific season in Hapoel Haifa/Motzkin, she couldn’t get a real chance in the best league in the world. “I had a little thing in Charlotte last year, it wasn’t even a tryout. The WNBA is a goal for me of course, as a female basketball player, especially being from the States”.
Selwyn is the Israeli league leader in assists per game with 4.9 APG, she's scoring 10.2 points per game and is ranked 2nd in assists to turnover ratio with 1.9 assists per turnover. With 5 rebounds per game, she is the league's 4th best rebounding guard.
In LA Selwyn, 23, will meet Mwadi Mabika (ex Ramat Hasharon) and Lisa Leslie who might be the best post in the world. LA’s starting point guard is the talented Nikki Teasley, and her back up is legendary Teresa Weatherspoon, who will celebrate her 40th birthday in August. We’ll of course be keeping our fingers crossed for Selwyn but don’t worry, even if she conquers Hollywood she won’t get too big for Israel: “Oh no no no, never”.
