Women's League Offseason Update

With the Women’s Division I season set to tip off on October 17, it’s time for a quick update on player movement and new key signings.

Regular season schedule 2011/12

Reigning Champion Ramla re-signed captain Shay Doron and season MVP Tanisha Wright, who will return for her 4th season in Israel. Adan Inbar's team also signed Amanda Jackson who holds an Armenian passport and Neda Djuric for the EuroCup.

Finalists Ashdod have added the NY Liberty’s Plenette Pierson, Meirav Dori from Ramat Hasharon and Ashley Sheilds, the league’s scoring champion from last season with Natanya. Nomi Kolodny re-signed for another season in Edni Dagan's squad.

Orna Ostfeld and Ramat Hasharon completed its roster by signing four Americans (as allowed by the new rule for the 2011/12 season). The big news is the return of Jia Perkins, who played with the club in the 2008 & 2009 seasons and is a member of the San Antonio Silver Stars. Joining Perkins are UNC graduate and Connecticut Sun member Jessica Breland, Georgia graduate and Silver Stars member Porsha Phillips, and guard Maurita Reid, University of Miami graduate who played in the EuroLeague last season. On the Israeli front, Ramat Hasharon re-signed Noa Ganor, Ayelet Cohen and Yael Aharonov, and also added ex-Hapoel Rishon Lezion forward Alysha Clark, who will play with an Israeli passport. The team's new assistant coach is former player Tamar Maoz.

Shiki Falach's Ramat Hen signed the Silver Stars’ rookie out of Oklahoma, Danielle Robinson, and the Phoenix Mercury's Erlana Larkins. Also signed are Michal Epstein and Shiran Zairy.

Raanana Herteliya has also completed its roster. On the Israeli front they signed Shimirt Gigi, Karin Agassi, Chen Segal and Shani Levi who continues from last season. The four Americans are Ketia Swanier, UConn graduate currently playing for the Connecticut Sun, Karima Christmas, rookie out of Duke for the Tulsa Shock, fresh UNC graduate Italee Lucas and Kerri Gardin, who played for Holon and joined the Washington Mystics this summer. The team will be coached by Daliah Bushinski, who continues from last season.

Natanya under coach Zohar Reizman, is also ready for the season. The club signed Georgia Tech graduate Lindasy Biggs, Okiesha Howard who played for Natanya in the 2010 season, South Florida graduate Jessica Lawson and Pittsburgh graduate Marcedes Walker who played in Italy last year. They join Israelis Roni Ben Nun, Ortal Oren, Shirly Shabtai, Regina Galayda and Adi Lux.

Hapoel Rishon Lezion added Ambrosia Anderson, who played for Ashdod last season, and signed three newcomers: Alexsis Grey-Lawson from the Phoenix Mercury, Arkansas graduate Lauren Ervin, and Indiana graduate Jori Davis. Shira Haelyon's team also re-signed Israelis Keren Nechama and Rivka Ross, and added Meital Ovadia and Nofar Shalom.

Holon (coached by Vito Gilich) and Hapoel Tel Aviv have yet to announce any foreigners signing.

There are also two new teams in the league, Hapoel Petah Tikva and B.C Habikaa. Petah Tikva, coached by Gili Sela, signed veteran Sheri Sam, UALR graduate Chastity Reed and UConn graduate Kaili Mc’Laren.

Habikaa basketball club, coached by Rafi Bogatin and assistant coach Tali Noy, inked four foreigners to join the four signed Israelis – Gat Megido, Liran Buchris, Dana Yahalomi and Inbal Mizrachi. Quenese Davis - guard out of San Diego State who played in Austria last season, Jenna Smith – center out of Illinois who played in France last season, Nyeshia Stevenson – guard out of Oklahoma who played in Italy last season and Amanda Thompson – who played with Stevenson in Oklahoma and spent last season in Austria, where she played with Davis.
