In her 3rd game with Toledo, Naama Shafir exploded for 33 points but couldn't prevent Toledo from suffering their first loss, 74-81 to Loyola Marymount. Shafir was named MVP of the tournament.
“Naama is a phenomenal point guard, we are so blessed to have her on our team” said Coach Tricia Cullop on Shafir who led the Rockets in scoring for the 2nd time in 3 games. “We didn’t get the result we wanted today, but I’m proud of our players and the effort they gave,” she continued. “If you would have told me before the season started that we were going to Hilo and beat Arizona and Hawaii and also have a chance to defeat Loyola Marymount, I honestly don’t know what I would have said, because of our inexperience. I thought we took huge steps forward these three games.”
Shafir was named MVP of the tournament, she averaged 19.7 points per game.
The Rockets started out well with a 14-3 run, and Shafir made 3 layups to make it 24-6 with 13 minutes left in the half. Marymount made a run of their own and were able to take the lead by halftime, 47-45.
The Rockets regained the lead in the 2nd half, 52-47, but couldn't break away again. The Rockets trailed 66-68 with 2:30 left but Marymount made 7 of 8 free throws to hold on to the win.
Toledo's next game will be on Sunday at Cincinnati.
