Ashdod Inks Baker & Elohim

Sherill Baker and Brashida Elohim, who won the Championship and Cup last season, signed with Maccabi Ashdod for 08/09.

Maccabi Ashdod signed Sherill Baker and Brashida Elohim who helped Ramla win the double last season. Baker & Elohim join Karin Agasi and Bat El Lazmi who are continuing from last season. Baker is Ashdod's first foreigner signed after losing Ayana Walker & Brandi McCain to Holon.

Sherill Baker came to Ramla midway through last season and became a very important part of the team's success in Israel and in the Eurocup. Baker was one of the best defenders in the league, and Ashdod vividly remembers her critical steal in their cup semi final loss to Ramla. Baker finished the season averaging 15.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game, and upped her numbers to 15.3 & 4.7 in the playoffs. Baker is currently playing for the WNBA's Indiana Fever in both back court positions. In six games so far, she has averaged 5.5 points in 10.5 minutes per game.

Brashida Elohim, an Israeli American, was a special-task player in Ramla last season, and didn’t play much. Elohim averaged 2.5 points in 8.5 minutes per game in the regular season. Her biggest game was game 4 of the playoff semi finals against Ramat Hasharon where she scored 11 in 19 minutes and helped Ramla avoid elimination.

"I'm glad we added two players who are experienced in the league and have been to the biggest games, players who won the championship", said Ashdod's coach, Dahlia Bushinsky. Ashdod will need to adjust to a new reality with Baker in place of McCain, who played on the team in the last four seasons. "There's no doubt Brandi's leaving creates a big void in the club and in our hearts, Brandi is a super player and an amazing person and Sherill is not coming to fill her spot", she said. "They're similar players but they're different, there's no doubt we'll need to make adjustments. I want to wish Brandi the best of luck in the future".
