Liron Cohen Player of the Month
Safsal ,02/29/2008
We tried to think who in the league deserves this month's award. Shay Doron who's playing so well for Ramla, or maybe Deanna Jackson again because there is no better proof for how valuable she is? And then we remembered our star overseas. Liron Cohen has had an amazing month where she led Leon to a historic cup finals which ended a basket shy of the title. She was the tournament MVP and she's Safsal's player of February.

Check out Liron Cohen's numbers this past month, in three league games and three cup games. 17.3 points (50% 2PT, 62.5% 3PT, 87.8% FTs) and 4.0 assists in 33.5 minutes per game. But the stats don't tell the story. For example, the numbers don’t show how she hit 7 of 8 threes en route to 33 points in Leon's win over league leading Valencia, 73 – 71.

Between the 15th and 17th of February, Leon played in Spain's Queen's Cup tournament. In the quarter finals Cohen had 11 points and 7 assists in a 71 – 61 win over Extrugasa which sent them to meet Salamanca in the semis. In league play Salamanca destroyed Leon by 34, but the cup semi was a different story. Leon got off to a 22 – 7 start with 10 points by Cohen, and Leon went on to win 76 – 63 behind 27 points and 6 assists by Cohen.

Leon made the cup finals for the first time in club history, and went up against the cup holders – Valencia. After being burned for 33 a week earlier, Valencia made sure to focus on Cohen throughout the game. Leon chased Valencia all night and never gave up, and Cohen hit an amazing three to cut it to 66 – 68 with 30 seconds left but her layup at the buzzed rimmed out. The Israeli guard finished with 12 points and was named tournament MVP after averaging 16.7 points (42.8% 2PT, 50% 3PT, 91.7% FTs) and 5.3 assists per game.
