Round 19 MVP - Shay Doron
Safsal ,02/19/2008
Shay Doron beat Ramat Hen and gets round 19's MVP honors. Joining her on the first team are three surprising winners and one tragic loser. In 'after shock', Safsal checks out all the burning trivia questions surrounding Ramat Hasharon and Ashdod, notices one very hot hand and can't figure out what's going on in Hertzeliya.

Round 19 MVP – Shay Doron
Shay Doron, Ramla's get-out-of-prison free ticket, did it again. An amazing shooting day for her ended with 28 points on 6 for 8 from downtown, including a tough game winning 3 with 3.6 seconds left that snapped the 78-78 tie. 28 points is one point shy off Doron's season high (which was at Tel Kabir where there was no boxscore), but the fact we've seen quite a few better games from her this year is nothing short of amazing.

Round 19 First Team
Sheri Sam – great game for Ashdod's forward who played a very smart game on both ends. Sam made sure Monique Coker doesn't get in the game and on the other side used her speed to get past her defenders right to the rim. Going inside early helped build up the confidence for the outside shot as the game progressed, Sam's huge 3 in overtime game Ashdod a 101-96 lead. She finished with 25 points and 7 rebounds.

Shay Doron – who said she doesn't have range?

La'Tangela Atkinson – Big double double for Atkinson in Holon's impressive win at Hertzeliya, 25 points and 12 rebounds.

Ayana Walker – Down 5, just over 2 minutes to go in the 4th, it looked like Ashdod was going to drop another game they had in the bag but Ayana Walker had other plans. She grabbed a huge offensive rebound and turned it into a 3-pt play, and on the next possession buried two free throws (11 for 12 on the game) to tie the score and get Ashdod back to life. She finished with 33 points and 10 rebounds in Ashdod’s big win at Ramat Hasharon.

Taj McWilliams Franklin – another great game for Ramat Hen’s terrific center on both ends of the floor with 25 points and 9 rebounds, and a huge shot at the buzzer that was an inch away from sending the game to overtime.

After Shock
Progress In Ashdod
Round 16 of the 02/03 season, that was the last time Ashdod beat Ramat Hasharon. It was in Ashdod of course, and it was their first season in division I which means up until last week, Ashdod has never won in Ramat Hasharon.
Now for those wondering when was the last time Ramat Hasharon lost back to back home games, plus to the same team and only a few days apart, well shame on you for not remembering. It was the 05/06 season, the playoff semi finals. Hapoel Tel Aviv (who had Ayana Walker) won games 3 and 5 at Ramat Hasharon to advance to the finals and eventually win the title.

Now even though we picked Walker and Sam for the 1st team of this round, much of the credit for Ashdod’s win goes to the Israeli players. Bat El Lazmi with 3 threes in the first half, Ortal Oren with a great 2nd half with 9 points, 4 assists and good defense and Michal Epstein with 10 4th quarter points out of her 17 made the difference. Right it down, 38 points for the Israelis, season high, don’t think we don’t know how to give props when they’re due.

Look out, on fire
In the last six league game she’s been scoring 21.8 points on 61.2% from inside and 48.1% from outside the arc, plus 96.7% from the line. She adds 4.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.8 steals per game. She gets to the line 5.0 time a game, and she’s the reason Ramla can still climb into 1st place by the end of the upper playoffs. Her name, you probably guessed it, is Shay Doron.

What’s going on?
76.6 points and 20.6 turnovers per game, 65.4% from the line, 36.2% from three. Those are definitely not the kind of numbers we’ve gotten used to seeing from Raanana Hertzeliya this season, but that’s the reality of the last 5 games. The loss to Holon could be the slap Shiki Falach’s team needs to wake up, and he better hope so. In this wild league Raanana Hertzeliya could finish anywhere between 1st and 3rd, and the road down is quick and slippery.
